“Scott Pilgrim: The Complete Series” – Bryan Lee O’Malley
Here is an example of me doing something in the wrong order. I saw the film adaptation of these graphic novels back in 2010, and I was obsessed. I actually identify a lot with Ramona – I too dye my hair very often, am a vegetarian, and don’t like confrontation. I do not, however, have 7 evil exes that my current boyfriend is required to battle in order to win the privilege of dating me. Scott Pilgrim is the (un?)lucky one who must battle 6 evil ex-boyfriends and 1 evil ex-lady before he can date his literal dream girl, Ramona Flowers. So I loved the movie, and many, many years later, I am presented with this awesome boxset of all 6 volumes of the graphic novel that started it all. And if you’re a fan of the film, you will love these; along with having some scenes from the movie that are almost word-for-word (and scene-for-scene) the same, the books are obviously much more elaborate and allow for some “deleted scene” type moments that any fan is sure to appreciate. I was definitely given more reasons to love some of the more minor characters, like Wallace Wells (roommate, gay) and Kim Pine (drummer, over it). As someone who does not typically read graphic novels, I am pleased to say that these are some of the most entertaining and endearing books you’ll ever read, and I highly recommend them, as well as the amazing film version of Scott Pilgrim’s epic love adventure.
(10/10 – these graphic novels have something for everyone: action, romance, comedy – all in an easy to read, comic book format.)
