TIL that carrots aren’t actually good for your eyes… it’s just a myth that the British government fabricated during WWII. They wanted to keep their newly developed radar system secret from the Germans and had to find some way to explain how they were suddenly shooting down a lot more planes.

germany: how are you guys destroying our planes so easily?

british guy who’s about to invent the myth about carrots being good for your eyes: oh you haven’t heard?

Carrots actually are good for your eyes, as says the article the original poster learned the stuff from. It’s just that the British gave carrots more credit than they deserve.

Yeah, vitamin A is important for eye health, and carrots have a lot of it. But vitamin A will not give you superpowers.

Also, spinach became the thing that gives Popeye his powers because a study misplaced a decimal point, so instead of saying that spinach has 3.5 milligrams of iron per 100g serving (good for you) it said that spinach had 35 milligrams of iron per 100g serving (not a thing that happens in vegetables).

The spinach giving Popeye his powers was actually the placebo effect
