This is such a horrible moment. The third gif conveys SO MUCH in just one look. Odin could not set aside his pride for thirty seconds to pull his suicidal son back to safety. He could have, but he did not. This is the moment that broke their relationship beyond repair. There was never going to be any coming back from this. This is the moment not only when Loki realized how flimsy his place in his own family was, but when Odin rejected Loki as his son as Loki is literally hanging off the edge. A thousand years of Loki being told a lies about who he is, where he belongs, who loves him – it all culminates in this single moment. Loki realizes. And he decides that he would rather be dead. He let go.
Loki could have done so much worse than strand Odin in relative comfort on Earth. And I’m sorry, Odin, but you can’t just show up at the eleventh hour, call Loki your son and tell him you love him, and then die, like that makes everything okay.
Loki calling himself Odin’s son in Infinity War was not for love of Odin at all. He said that for Thor’s benefit – that even though Odin hurt him so terribly, claiming himself as his son once again makes him Thor’s brother again. He died wanting Thor to know Loki considered him his brother.
